In a somber turn of events, the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces (FAR) announced the death of Corporal Karim Tmara, a dedicated peacekeeper serving with the United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO). The incident, which occurred due to an accidental electrocution while operating a water pump, underscores the often-overlooked dangers faced by peacekeepers in their line of duty.

This tragic loss adds to the toll of Moroccan peacekeepers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service of global peace. To date, 60 Moroccan personnel have perished while fulfilling their peacekeeping responsibilities across various UN missions, including MONUSCO, ONUC, UNAMIS, and UNTAC.

The United Nations has long recognized the invaluable contributions of peacekeepers from around the world. Since the inception of UN peacekeeping operations in 1948, a total of 4,380 personnel have lost their lives in the pursuit of international stability and security.

Morocco's commitment to global peacekeeping efforts remains steadfast, with the nation currently standing as the 8th largest contributor of troops to UN operations. At present, 1,714 Moroccan peacekeepers are deployed in various missions worldwide, demonstrating the country's ongoing dedication to international peace and security.

The risks faced by these brave men and women were further highlighted last May when UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres honored two Moroccan peacekeepers who died while serving with the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

As the international community mourns the loss of Corporal Tmara, his death serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by peacekeepers in their quest to maintain stability in some of the world's most challenging regions. It also emphasizes the need for continued support and recognition of these unsung heroes who work tirelessly to promote peace and security across the globe.
