Macron Endorses Moroccan Sovereignty in Sahara: A Diplomatic Commitment
In a significant diplomatic gesture, French President Emmanuel Macron has reaffirmed France's support for Moroccan sovereignty over Sahara. This endorsement was reiterated during his recent meeting with Morocco’s Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, against the backdrop of the 80th anniversary of the Allies’ Provence Landing.
A statement from the Elysee detailed Macron's commitment to resolving the Sahara issue, aligning with his prior communication to King Mohammed VI. Macron emphasized that "the present and future of Sahara fall within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty."
Akhannouch expressed appreciation for France’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty in the region, highlighting the importance of this stance for national security.
Macron also took the opportunity to honor the historical ties between the nations, acknowledging Moroccan soldiers who fought alongside French and Allied forces during World War II. He awarded the title of “Chevalier of the Legion of Honor” to Larbi Jawa, a 98-year-old Moroccan veteran of both WWII and the First Indochina War.
The discussions further included the development of a comprehensive bilateral roadmap to strengthen cooperation across various sectors, including economics, agriculture, energy, culture, and education. Macron and Akhannouch underscored the focus on youth initiatives in Morocco and throughout Africa.
The statement concluded by stressing the vital role of French-Moroccan cooperation in tackling global challenges, from industrial advancements to climate change solutions.
